A month ago no one thought the Expos and Bears would be playing in the championship game but due to some turnarounds in the pitching department here we were on a cool Wednesday evening at Verona.
The Expos rode their newly found workhorse on the mound in Jason Foskett. The rookie delivered once again, pitching 5 solid innings, only allowing a first inning run. Steve Hill pitched 2 nearly perfect innings to get the save, including fielding a hot smash up the middle by Bears Tom Hopkins for the final out.
The Bears Ray Wojtak was equal to the task in a classic pitchers duel but the ‘spos were able to scratch across a run in the first and 2 in the second on 3 consecutive singles by Griffin, Wilde and Pflieger which plated one and Steve Hill’s grounder to short plated the second. Another single run in the fourth off a walk and stolen base by Goldschmidt followed by a deep drive to left by Expos manager Dargan.
That was all the Expos needed in a swiftly played game to bring home their first title in franchise history.
Many beers and pizzas were consumed in celebration at the Fifth Quarter.
